Ever since she was born, Marron has been able to see and hear empathy rather than sense it. It would have been one thing if her parents, who both carried the genes for magic and empathy, had been aware of their own magical potential. However, Marron's parents were both oblivious to their abilities, as well as Marron. So neither parent was ever really aware of what caused their daughter to react to things neither of them could see, nor did either of her parents understand how to help her through it.
From the moment she could talk, Marron would converse with the "spirits" that clung to the areas around her residence. She learned to talk very quickly as a result and mastered some oddly complicated words and topics for a girl her age. At first her parents thought it was really cute, but Marron's collection of random knowledge began to get oddly creepy over time. She would sometimes stop and tell them about a car accident that she could hear the aftermath of or talk to them about the life of a spirit she was communicating with. Her parents never bothered trying to verify Marron's stories, as elaborate as they got, and tried to pass it off as her just having really disturbing and strange imaginary friends. Gently, they tried to help her "grow out of it".
But growing out of your reality is rather difficult. Marron had trouble comprehending the fact that no one else could see and hear what she did, since the empathy she experienced was so firmly rooted into her reality. As Marron grew up she became frustrated with her parents' attempts to deny what she was seeing. Deciding that her parents might be exceptions to this viewpoint, Marron tried to confine in friends and teachers. The end result was always the same; being teased by her classmates for still having imaginary friends at age nine or frightening her teachers with her disturbing stories.
Eventually, Marron was scheduled frequent trips to the school's counselor. She did not mind at first and honestly trusted the counselor with her secrets. But the more she explained the more concerned she made those around her. As her teachers began to call her parents and confirm if maybe her home life had an influence on her behavior the Dystini family became horribly embarrassed. Rumors floated among the parents of her classmates that something strange must happen at home and her parents became very ashamed. Eventually, by the time Marron was ten, they decided to move.
Then they moved again.
And again.
And again.
Try as they might, they couldn't find a place where Marron's strange quirky "problem" didn't come up. They would try to switch her between schools, talk to counselors, have family counseling sessions... they wanted to do whatever they could to help Marron but never concluded that she had any sort of sixth sense. The relationship between her mother and father was becoming strained as they had conflicting views on how to best help their daughter.
And Marron watched it all, still able to see and hear the feelings around her. She was all too aware of how much her parents wanted to help and wanted to help them just as much.
So, by the time she was twelve, Marron gave up. She stopped talking about what she could see and started acting like she was "cured". Her parents were immensely relieved and happy. Their marriage pieced back together and the family became even happier than before. Marron quieted down and followed along with the cues given, but was otherwise very careful not to reveal what she was seeing and hearing. The end result was Marron becoming very quiet and reluctant to speak up. She found that it was comfortable to fade into the background and much less troublesome for everyone that way.
It was also around this time that Marron formally met Fate. Fate was a distant relative of hers; a relative stuck in the past. Fate was completely incapable of interacting with the present, but her feelings were able to reach Marron. Truthfully, it was Fate who tampered with her relatives' genetics slowly over time to arrange for Marron's mutation. Marron was the miracle that Fate needed to carry out her plans.
Fate's plans were far from simple. She explained to Marron that she had been locked up in the past by a witch named Vinita Godono. Vinita was the head of an organization called the MASQ, which existed to protect magic users. This was all news to Marron, but she gladly accepted that there were others somewhat like her-- just with non-defective empathy. Under Fate's guidance, Marron began to train her magic. Fate knew about the price system, a system that limited the magic output a person could use and took things away from those who went over their limit, and carefully guided Marron around it.
By the time that she was thirteen, Marron's magical competency was exception and she was noticed by the MASQ. She was allowed to enter in an annual contest that allowed underage magic users to gain a "witch's title" earlier than they would normally be able to. In exchange for their title they were allowed to use more magic without suffering a penalty. Marron was one of the winners and earned the title "Shooter Witch" because she was very skilled with firearms, which she acquired through the MASQ as magic devices (though, she couldn't use real bullets at the time).
With her title acquired, Marron began to work under Fate's instructions to prepare her plan. Fate wanted to prepare a certain witch, Kuroneko Satou, to one day be a "magic battery" with the power Fate needed to break free from her prison and erase the magic price system. Marron became more interested in Fate than anything else and enjoyed her company, since Fate would listen to Marron's stories and understood she wasn't insane. Fate was Marron's first real friend, even if she was essentially using the girl.
Marron was thirteen and newly titled when she met Kuroneko Satou and Sakura Masume. She gave both sisters the magical devices that jump-started their magical girl days and carefully monitored their progress. Satou and Masume met other magic users who helped them learn to use their abilities properly, so Marron didn't need to make many appearances. Even when she did, Marron was careful to cover up her trail and hide her identity. She did not want Vinita to realize she was working for Fate.
As the Game of Fate manga starts, Marron is fifteen years old and has recently transferred to another school; this time on request. During the two years that the sisters were adjusting to magic Marron had spare time and began studying more. She decided that she wanted to transfer to a new school to further her learning.
At this new school, Marron met her first friends that were not Fate. Amy, Chris, and Joshua were part of the school's under loved paranormal investigation team. Chris, as it turned out, had been a classmate of Marron's before she stopped talking about her parents. Through him, Amy and Joshua learned/decided that Marron was an ESPer and drafted her to their club as a medium. Marron followed along out of honest interest since the idea of people her age liking her ability made her very happy. The four became close friends and Marron gladly followed along with their paranormal hunting shenanigans.
But those happy days got complicated. The club started to stumble upon legit paranormal incidents and would cross paths with magic users who did not appreciate them being there. Marron was a bit hesitant but took up the role of beating back anyone who tried to get in the way of her friends' fun. She accidentally uncovered the fact that Chris also had the potential for magic, but was very eager to train him to use it. Nothing made Marron happier than not feeling alone in her world and her friends brought her lots of happiness.
This revealed to Marron what she valued above all else, and what was the price of her magic; friendship. As Marron began pushing her limits more and more to keep her friends safe she began to feel sick around them. Fate was sad to explain to her that this was because of Marron's magic price; she didn't directly lose her friends but instead lost her ability to hang around them. She developed a freaking friendship allergy.
IT.
SUCKED.
When she spent time with her friends she would run a fever and get dizzy, and eventually she would pass out. Over time she developed a bit of a tolerance to it, but Fate began to discourage her from spending time with her friends. Marron refused to listen and stubbornly kept attending club meetings. This was only okay with Fate until Marron had to step in and help Satou and Masume more. Marron would arrive sick and slip up, often putting herself and the girls in unnecessary danger.
So Fate intervened.
Using the small bits of magical influence she still had, Fate arranged for Marron to catch the eye of another academy and offer her a scholarship. Marron's parents were thrilled and, though sad to see her go, her friends were just as happy for her. Though she would have preferred to stay with her friends, Marron went along with her parents' pressure and switched schools. She promised to keep in touch with her old friends.
But Fate intercepted all of their mail.
And they lost contact.
Now sixteen, Marron is back to her half-reluctance to make friends. Not just because it's hard to befriend people when you're always running a fever around them but because she's quite hurt by the lack of contact from her old friends. Besides, she no longer has time for friendship. Fate took advantage of Marron's loneliness and made her even more busy. Between schoolwork and helping Fate she's far too busy to waste time on friendship. Besides, Marron figures, why does she need other friends when she has someone as kind and supportive as Fate?
