Player name: Berri
Character Name: Marron Dystini
Character Canon: Original Character
Canon point: After Fate gets her to leave her old school. Marron will have been on the train to her new school when she was approached.

Background:
To begin, Marron isn't a standalone OC. She is one of many characters that make up a unique world and 'canon' called "Game of Fate". Her world's history is here and an old world description for a previous RP is here.

Now then~ Marron specific:

In Marron's world, a magic user typically has two genetic gifts; a capacity for magic and empathy. As a pure blood witch, Marron has had both of these since she was born.
But not in the same way as most witches.
Ever since she was born, Marron has been able to see and hear empathy rather than sense it. It would have been one thing if her parents, who both carried the genes for magic and empathy, had been aware of their own magical potential. However, Marron's parents were both oblivious to their abilities, as was Marron. So neither parent was ever really aware of what caused their daughter to react to things neither of them could see, nor did either of her parents understand how to help her through it.

From the moment she could talk, Marron would converse with the "spirits" that clung to the areas around her residence. She learned to talk very quickly as a result and mastered some oddly complicated words and topics for a girl her age. At first her parents thought it was really cute, but Marron's collection of random knowledge began to get oddly creepy over time. She would sometimes stop and tell them about a car accident that she could hear the aftermath of or talk to them about the life of a spirit she was communicating with. Her parents never bothered trying to verify Marron's stories, as elaborate as they got, and tried to pass it off as her just having really disturbing and strange imaginary friends. Gently, they tried to help her "grow out of it".

But growing out of your reality is rather difficult. Marron had trouble comprehending the fact that no one else could see and hear what she did, since the empathy she experienced was so firmly rooted into her reality. As Marron grew up she became frustrated with her parents' attempts to deny what she was seeing. Deciding that her parents might be exceptions to this viewpoint, Marron tried to confine in friends and teachers. The end result was always the same; being teased by her classmates for still having imaginary friends at age nine or frightening her teachers with her disturbing stories.

Eventually, Marron was scheduled frequent trips to the school's counselor. She did not mind at first and honestly trusted the counselor with her secrets. But the more she explained the more concerned she made those around her. As her teachers began to call her parents and confirm if maybe her home life had an influence on her behavior the Dystini family became horribly embarrassed. Rumors floated among the parents of her classmates that something strange must happen at home and her parents became very ashamed. Eventually, by the time Marron was ten, they decided to move.

Then they moved again.
And again.
And again.
Try as they might, they couldn't find a place where Marron's strange quirky "problem" didn't come up. They would try to switch her between schools, talk to counselors, have family counseling sessions... they wanted to do whatever they could to help Marron but never concluded that she had any sort of sixth sense. The relationship between her mother and father was becoming strained as they had conflicting views on how to best help their daughter.
And Marron watched it all, still able to see and hear the feelings around her. She was all too aware of how much her parents wanted to help and wanted to help them just as much.

So, by the time she was twelve, Marron gave up. She stopped talking about what she could see and started acting like she was "cured". Her parents were immensely relieved and happy. Their marriage pieced back together and the family became even happier than before. Marron quieted down and followed along with the cues given, but was otherwise very careful not to reveal what she was seeing and hearing. The end result was Marron becoming very quiet and reluctant to speak up. She found that it was comfortable to fade into the background and much less troublesome for everyone that way.

It was also around this time that Marron formally met Fate. Fate was a distant relative of hers; a relative stuck in the past. Fate was completely incapable of interacting with the present, but her feelings were able to reach Marron. Truthfully, it was Fate who tampered with her relatives' genetics slowly over time to arrange for Marron's mutation. Marron was the miracle that Fate needed to carry out her plans.

Fate's plans were far from simple. She explained to Marron that she had been locked up in the past by a witch named Vinita Godono. Vinita was the head of an organization called the MASQ, which existed to protect magic users. This was all news to Marron, but she gladly accepted that there were others somewhat like her-- just with non-defective empathy. Under Fate's guidance, Marron began to train her magic. Fate knew about the price system, a system that limited the magic output a person could use and took things away from those who went over their limit, and carefully guided Marron around it.

By the time that she was thirteen, Marron's magical competency was exception and she was noticed by the MASQ. She was allowed to enter in an annual contest that allowed underage magic users to gain a "witch's title" earlier than they would normally be able to. In exchange for their title they were allowed to use more magic without suffering a penalty. Marron was one of the winners and earned the title "Shooter Witch" because she was very skilled with firearms, which she acquired through the MASQ as magic devices (though, she couldn't use real bullets at the time).

With her title acquired, Marron began to work under Fate's instructions to prepare her plan. Fate wanted to prepare a certain witch, Kuroneko Satou, to one day be a "magic battery" with the power Fate needed to break free from her prison and erase the magic price system. Marron became more interested in Fate than anything else and enjoyed her company, since Fate would listen to Marron's stories and understood she wasn't insane. Fate was Marron's first real friend, even if she was essentially using the girl.

Marron was thirteen and newly titled when she met Kuroneko Satou and Sakura Masume. She gave both sisters the magical devices that jump-started their magical girl days and carefully monitored their progress. Satou and Masume met other magic users who helped them learn to use their abilities properly, so Marron didn't need to make many appearances. Even when she did, Marron was careful to cover up her trail and hide her identity. She did not want Vinita to realize she was working for Fate.

As the Game of Fate manga starts, Marron is fifteen years old and has recently transferred to another school; this time on request. During the two years that the sisters were adjusting to magic Marron had spare time and began studying more. She decided that she wanted to transfer to a new school to further her learning.

At this new school, Marron met her first friends that were not Fate. Amy, Chris, and Joshua were part of the school's under loved paranormal investigation team. Chris, as it turned out, had been a classmate of Marron's before she stopped talking about her parents. Through him, Amy and Joshua learned/decided that Marron was an ESPer and drafted her to their club as a medium. Marron followed along out of honest interest since the idea of people her age liking her ability made her very happy. The four became close friends and Marron gladly followed along with their paranormal hunting shenanigans.

But those happy days got complicated. The club started to stumble upon legit paranormal incidents and would cross paths with magic users who did not appreciate them being there. Marron was a bit hesitant but took up the role of beating back anyone who tried to get in the way of her friends' fun. She accidentally uncovered the fact that Chris also had the potential for magic, but was very eager to train him to use it. Nothing made Marron happier than not feeling alone in her world and her friends brought her lots of happiness.
This revealed to Marron what she valued above all else, and what was the price of her magic; friendship. As Marron began pushing her limits more and more to keep her friends safe she began to feel sick around them. Fate was sad to explain to her that this was because of Marron's magic price; she didn't directly lose her friends but instead lost her ability to hang around them. She developed a freaking friendship allergy.

IT.

SUCKED.

When she spent time with her friends she would run a fever and get dizzy, and eventually she would pass out. Over time she developed a bit of a tolerance to it, but Fate began to discourage her from spending time with her friends. Marron refused to listen and stubbornly kept attending club meetings. This was only okay with Fate until Marron had to step in and help Satou and Masume more. Marron would arrive sick and slip up, often putting herself and the girls in unnecessary danger.

So Fate intervened.

Using the small bits of magical influence she still had, Fate arranged for Marron to catch the eye of another academy and offer her a scholarship. Marron's parents were thrilled and, though sad to see her go, her friends were just as happy for her. Though she would have preferred to stay with her friends, Marron went along with her parents' pressure and switched schools. She promised to keep in touch with her old friends.

But Fate intercepted all of their mail.
And they lost contact.

Now sixteen, Marron is back to her half-reluctance to make friends. Not just because it's hard to befriend people when you're always running a fever around them but because she's quite hurt by the lack of contact from her old friends. Besides, she no longer has time for friendship. Fate took advantage of Marron's loneliness and made her even more busy. Between schoolwork and helping Fate she's far too busy to waste time on friendship. Besides, Marron figures, why does she need other friends when she has someone as kind and supportive as Fate?

Abilities:
Marron Dystini is a unique character in Game of Fate, but still has the basics of her world's magic. She is a distant relative of Fate Dystini, a witch trapped in time, and inherits a special ability that Fate planted into her destiny. Since the day of her birth, Marron has had defective empathy; rather than feeling emotions, Marron can see and hear them. This has led to her being able to see the hearts of those who refuse to pass on ( "ghosts" ) and emotions imprinted in a place ( "unaware ghosts / residual hauntings" ). Similarly, Marron can hear emotions left behind by strong outbursts; screams, cries, and laughs that seemingly have no owner. On top of this, Marron is genetically capable of magic and is Fate's messenger, so has inherited and developed a number of abilities to assist her with her goals.

Summarizing her powers & abilities;

Defective Empathy→
Most "witches" in Marron's world have empathy. It allows them to feel emotions around them as they are expressed in "waves". For a normal witch, empathy lets them experience the feelings of others from a distance.

This is not the case with Marron. While it's true that Marron does have empathy she does not "feel" emotions. Instead, Marron sees them. Rather than feel the waves she can see them. When asked to describe how she can tell one emotion from another, Marron would simply say that she just knows. She's lived with the ability long enough to distinguish subtle changes in the waves that tip her off to what feeling it is.

Marron can also "hear" emotions; this gives her very mild ESP, as she's able to vaguely hear what people are thinking. She does not usually hear words but instead hears mumbles. Angry mumbles, sad mumbles, sobs, screams, laughter... she can pick up on this mental sounds. A very strong feeling may be heard with a few words for phrases. For example, Marron passes a serial killer in the street at one point and can hear the intent to "KILL KILL KILL".

The emotions that Marron experiences do not have to happen in the present either. She can see feelings that have clung to objects or places due to emotional outbursts or severe trauma. This allows Marron to see residual hauntings; ghosts that imprint their traumatic deaths on a location and relive it over and over. She can also see and communicate with ghosts--- or as they are in her world, souls that have stayed behind on Earth. She can see them due to their feelings and hear their voices. This is how she can communicate with Fate, even if Fate is stuck in the past.

Eyes of Fate→
This ability only applies to places where she is with Fate, so won't be brought up in the RP. However, she's likely to mention it. Fate is able to temporarily give Marron the ability to see and hear what she does.. This takes a lot of concentration on Marron's part, as she has to balance two viewpoints at once. Her human brain isn't quite prepared to interpret two scenes at once so she will usually close her eyes to focus on what Fate is seeing. This can make her quite vulnerable.

Marron can also do the same for Fate, though it is Fate that has to activate the connection.

Magic→
Marron is a witch so it therefore capable of magic. Her potential for magic is decent; at 100% power Marron is capable of leveling a city with a single explosion. However, she is only at Level Three and can therefore only tap into 50% of her total power. She remains at 50% for the entire series and won her title in the Title Competition when she was 13 years old. At 50% power, Marron could perhaps bring down a skyscraper. The typical price for her magic is friendship; Marron becomes physically ill when she gets too close to someone.

However, Marron does not often use her magic. The price of her magic is constant, so she will only run a fever when around friends. She's fine with this and tries to hide it. Marron works with Fate so that she can erase the price of her magic and be able to bring her friends miracles and still be by their side.

Guns→
Rather than use magic directly, Marron has trained herself to use basic firearms. She's been training since she was twelve, with Fate's help in sneaking her way to shooting ranges and using her magic to get what she needs. Marron's weapons are licensed with the MASQ because they're actually her magical device. She can cast spells through the gun and fire magic in the place of bullets. Marron can also trap spells into her gun before hand and cheat the magic system a bit; the magic is unimportant to her at the time, so she can put more than her 50% limit into a single bullet and pay only a tiny price. Then she can fire them in any situation and have the price pre-paid.

She's also trained herself to use regular ammo. For a girl her age, Marron is pretty physically fit and doesn't suffer much from the recoil of firing a gun. Her policy is that she cannot allow herself to use her weapons if she has not trained properly. Marron tries to practice two or three times a week and refuses to fire her weapon if she's missed a practice session. She has a senpai who assists her.

Mild Self-Healing→
When injured, Marron's body automatically uses some spare magic in reserve to heal her. Scraps and bruises will heal in only around twelve hours and major injuries take only a fraction of the regular time to heal. This ability is automatic and she cannot use it on other people.

Personality:
Let's get this out of the way first; Marron's a bit of a woobie.

Okay, done.

As it's emphasized all over her information, Marron has been able to see and hear empathy since she was young. Often, this means having an ability to hear, see, and communicate with ghosts. Her rare (read: defective) ability has given her reason to isolate herself socially. And though Marron has an interest in making friends and being like the other kids around her, she's now so caught up in the affairs of a girl named Fate to think of herself as having the time, or need, to do so.

Marron's personality should probably start with her reality and how she reacts to it. While some kids may be scared of the idea of ghosts and may even be terrified to have an ability like Marron's, she is far from bothered. Having had this ability for so long now, Marron is so used to it that she finds it totally normal. Though she may shudder a bit when she sees a murder replay before her very eyes Marron has seen it so many times that she recognizes what she sees cannot hurt her and should not scare her. She's rather practical about her ability, since she has had to learn to deal with it all on her own.

For the longest time Marron felt no shame about it either. She never hesitated to talk about what she could see and hear because she considered it to be so absolutely normal. Even now, Marron does not think her ability is anything bad as long as she keeps mostly quiet about it. Still, just like the days when she spoke about it openingly, Marron longs to talk about what she is seeing with other people and have them acknowledge it as reality. While the ability itself does not bother her it does sting to have people deny it.

Despite the fact that many people consider her to be possibly insane, Marron has little to no doubt in regards to her sanity. The fact that it was denied all throughout her childhood did not make Marron wonder if she was insane; it just frustrated her. Marron is a pretty logical person but she is also quite stubborn and does not doubt things that she sees or hears for herself. Even if no one else were see a UFO pass through the sky if Marron herself caught a glimpse then she would likely believe it.
This trait helps keep Marron sane throughout all of the pestering about her sanity, but also gives way to a few flaws. For example, Marron is a bit gullible. If she sees or hears something then she will believe it. Sarcasm completely goes over her head for this reason and she has a hard time taking a joke. If you explain it to her then she'll probably understand and may even giggle, but the fact is that you'll probably have to explain it to her. Maybe some of this is just because Marron is a bit socially stupid, but it's also largely because sight and hearing are two very important senses to Marron. They dominate her world because she can see and hear so much and learn so much from those two senses, so Marron puts a lot of faith in them. Though she may be confident about seeing a UFO or something, Marron will have her normal doubts about things she touches, smells, and tastes. These senses don't have the same level of confidence as the other two.

However, despite strongly believing in her sight and hearing, she has resigned herself to the fact that not many people will ever acknowledge it. Through trial and error, Marron has come to the conclusion that there are some things best not talked about; her ability is one of them. Even if she would love to share what she hears with others she has come to terms with the fact that she just needs to bite her tongue about it.
The fact still remains that her empathy plays a large role in her life. When she was younger and first resigned herself to not talking about it she still could not control it and would continue to hear and see things no one else would. To avoid accidentally bringing it up in conversation Marron stopped talking unless asked about something. She cut herself off socially and came to seem like someone who didn't want to think much for herself and was happy to just be a yes man.

This wasn't quite true; Marron just kept her thoughts to herself. Because she kept them to herself, Marron was never scolded for thinking rude things. No one knew she was thinking them so how could they scold her? So Marron grew up unaware of the difference between which of her thoughts were acceptable to say aloud and what was just too rude to speak about.
She never learned to properly phrase sentences either and when she did start talking later on she would often phrase things in a mean and blunt way without realizing it was bad. By this point in her canon Marron is starting to speak up more but is still needing to learn what is okay to say and what isn't. Her word choices are often very rude. Marron has seen enough of people getting scolded for swearing and has learned to reflexively say her "please"s and "thank you"s though, and will often automatically display that much of a proper upbringing.

Everything else, though, is usually sharp-tongued, blunt, and sometimes accidentally hurtful.

Marron may not be socially gifted, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't enjoy social interactions. The fact that Marron loves the idea of friends is highlighted no better than it is by the price of her magic. The most precious thing to Marron is being able to spend carefree time with friends. Marron really truly wants to have fun times with friends and to be able to talk openingly to people. Once she feels comfortable with someone she will smile more frequently and you may even have trouble shutting her up. Marron would chat with friends from sunrise to sunset if she could. She loves to listen just as much and will quickly listen to stories forever, provided that she feels you aren't looking down on her but are treating her like an equal.

Her love for friendship is a stubborn one too. Marron will go above and beyond for those she cares about, though they are few in number. It's this love that drives her to protect her paranormal investigating club buddies. Even when their investigating is actually getting them into a lot of trouble and forcing Marron to really stick her neck out for them, she continues to fight for them so and protect their happiness. She has a hard time denying someone she truly likes something that she wants and will do her best to help them achieve it. This is especially apparent in the case of Fate; Fate demands a lot from Marron in order to accomplish her plan and Marron is willing to give up everything to help her friend out.
Even after realizing that she is allergic to friendship, Marron continues to try to put up with her sickness and be with her friends. She probably would have kept this up forever if not for Fate's intervention.

There is a problem with how much Marron will go through for her friends, though. That is that she is easily hurt. Yes, Marron will go to the end of the earth to make a friend happy... but she won't do it for free. She's not about to let herself be pushed around. Marron's idea of friendship is a two way road where both parties will go through a lot for each other. If she doesn't feel that you're trying to be her friend in return then she will cut ties with you, even if it hurts. Once again, Marron is quite practical... unfortunately so, maybe, in this case. She sees no point in risking her life for someone who she sees is just using her. So while she may be ready to throw a lot of loyalty and love at your feet, you'd better be ready to return the favor. Even if you can't cast super awesome magic spells like Marron can, the least you could do is put forth a similar amount of effort.

Cutting ties really hurts Marron though. She reasons to herself that it's for the best but that does not make it easy. Whenever she cuts ties she becomes withdrawn for a bit. Being taken advantage of sends Marron into a period of loneliness and sadness. Though it generally doesn't last long it will result in her being unfriendly and especially spectacle of any future friendship attempts for at least a month after the incident. Marron might be willing to put something behind her but she does so only under the self expectation that she learn from it.

Friendship is one value to Marron. Her next one is keeping busy and productive. Marron has found herself with a lot of time to herself and hates to spend it doing nothing. Reading a book does qualify as productive to Marron but only if it's educational. She's not a person with much interest in things like fairytales and the fiction genre in general. Marron loves learning and is always gravitating to new subjects. She feels best if she is learning something new or refreshing herself on something she may have forgotten. It's not just that Marron finds learning itself fun, which she does, but that she enjoys the feeling of accomplishment that she gets from learning new things.

When not learning, Marron dedicates her time to Fate. Fate is someone that Marron blindly trusts and is always happy to help. Though part of her will always recognize that what she does for Fate is to help Fate Marron has been working alongside her so long that she considers Fate's goal to be her own. It's important to note that Marron never once ever feels used. She is never once ever bitter about all of the time she gives up to Fate or how much she lets Fate boss her around. Marron is very happy to do this for her friend, especially now that she feels so heavily invested in Fate's plan.

But that will not last forever. While Marron doesn't object to helping Fate she has her own morals. These morals make Marron a bit hesitant to give in to some of Fate's methods. When Kuroneko Satou was forced into a murderous rampage Marron strongly disagreed with Fate. They argued over it, even. Marron is not blind; the exact opposite, actually. If she disagrees with something then she'll bring it up and she will not act anymore until there is a compromise. It's Marron's stubbornness about not liking senseless murder and suffering that forces Fate's plan to take so damn long. She could have wrapped it up very quickly if not for Marron's persistence. But once again; even though she disagrees with Fate on occasion, Marron does not feel used. The fact that Fate compromises just invests Marron more in what Fate is doing, since she feels that was once Fate's solo plan is now something they share.

Not liking the suffering of others is a strong motive for Marron. She might be a quiet person who rarely smiles and says jerkish things, but she is a softy on the inside. But that does not mean that Marron thinks the world is all sunshine and rainbows. She understands that there is evil in the world and there will be times when she has to pull the trigger to get rid of it. Though she would not take killing an enemy as her first option, Marron is not going to dance around the topic forever either. If she exhausts all of the other options or is in a situation where it's the only way to protect people then she will kill.

However, if she can help it, Marron doesn't like killing with magic. If she can do so without magic then she will take that option instead. Not because Marron likes to get her hands messy or gets a kick out of shooting people dead but because she sees using magic as a way to distance herself from her crime. When Marron decided to use firearms in the place of sparkly magical powers she fully accepted that this meant bringing herself one step closer to any crimes she committed and she doesn't want to run from the responsibility. She may break down and cry after killing someone and sometimes it haunts her to her dreams, but Marron is very stubborn in the belief that to not be haunted by murder is worse than being haunted.

This may be because she's spent so much time watching the sisters. She's seen what magic does to people as she sets them up on life lesson adventures. She has seen nice people be corrupted by their ability to do anything. Marron doesn't want to identity as a witch. She does not use her witch's title. For as long as she can, Marron wants to cling to the humanity that she believes those who murder with magic have lost. Marron tries to forcefully humble herself and doesn't like people who abuse magic. She isn't against magic itself, nor is she against the idea of people who use magic, but the moment they stop thinking about their actions is the moment that Marron stops approving of a particular person's magic use.

Her attachment to the responsibility to magic influences her own magic use and her decisions with her firearms. Marron tries to train her magic constantly so that she is always used to it and respects her limits, but does not train with the idea of relying on it in mind. Similarly, Marron doesn't practice with her shooting with the intention of always using her gun. She wants to train her human body and be ready emotionally and physically for trouble. If Marron has not trained herself within the past two weeks then she is very reluctant to use her weapons, feeling that not training makes her too irresponsible to use a weapon that could potentially kill.

One might note that Marron applies this to other things. She does not like to lend her help in a matter that she doesn't feel confident that she can handle. She's come off as a royal jerk at school because she will not help paint a theatre set when she doesn't fully understand what she's painting. She won't edit someone's paper for more than grammar mistakes if she isn't confident that she can do so and truly do a good job. Marron doesn't like accepting responsibility if she doesn't feel like she could accept the failure. To do something half-heartedly feels wrong to her.

So all in all... Marron can be kind of cold. She likes friendship and she'll go out of her way for it, but she's not hesitant about cutting ties with people. She is kind of a jerk and she is kind of socially awkward and yes she is a pretty serious person for her age... But she does want to make friends and she does want to protect people.

She also really loves frogs. She thinks they're the cutest things ever.
Slugs, lizards, fish, sharks, and snakes are also big favorites of hers.
